Understanding Meta tags: Definition, meta tag analysis of a webpage of choice and description of each meta tag
Definition
Meta tags are the text fragments which describes the page's content. They do not appear in the actual page but only on the source code of page. Meta tags are simply tiny content descriptors that help search engines to understand the purpose of a page(WordStream, 2022).Meta Tags only exist in HTML and are found at the "head" of the page, and are therefore visible to search engines. The "meta" stands for "metadata", which is the type of data that these tags offer- data about the information on the page(WordStream, 2022).
Types of Meta Tags
The four major types of Meta tags are:
- Meta Keywords Attribute: A list of keywords that are considered to be applicable to the page.
- Title Tag: The text that appears at the top of browser and in SERP. This text is seen as the "title" by search engine.
- Meta Description Attribute: An overview of page.
- Meta Robots Attribute: This tells search engine crawlers(robots or "bots") what do do with page(WordStream, 2022).
